DP Shane Hurlbut's Illumination Experience Kicks Off In Venice, Ca

The best master class in cinematography a student can take is one taught by a master of the craft. Respected DP and ASC member Shane Hurlbut will be sharing his knowledge in a 26 city tour beginning September 14th.

“The Illumination Experience” will kick off its North American Tour in Irvine, California, on September 14th. The tour will head East, with stops in states including Texas, Arizona, Washington, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York and Massachusetts. The tour will also conduct seminars in Vancouver and Toronto. It will wind its way back West and conclude in Los Angeles on November 16th.

Attendees in all twenty-six cities will participate in the Illumination Workshop. The Illumination Workshop focuses on Hurlbut’s avant-garde approach to three-point lighting – illustrated in an interactive live shoot. Divided into three phases: discovery, creation, and execution, Hurlbut’s students will confidentially design, develop, enhance, and supplement the storytelling process with lighting, script analysis, storyboard preparation, lighting schematics, and shot lists.

Hurlbut will also be offering “The Experience Masterclass” in eight of the twenty-six cities included on his route. The Experience Masterclass is a day-long hands-on intensive consisting of two live shoots. The class will be divided into four teams. The teams will follow Shane’s lighting schematics to re-create film scenes from Crazy/Beautiful (2001) and Swing Vote (2008). With Shane’s guidance, students will learn to integrate methodical lighting with precise camera motion to achieve impactful results. Students will experiment with gear such as the Fisher 10 Dolly, the Movi, and the Kessler Crane in conjunction with various lights, filters, flags and bounces. Shane will critique each scene and provide customized feedback to each team.

Shane Hurlbut, A.S.C., is a world-renowned cinematographer who has shot multimillion dollar blockbuster films such as “Act of Valor”, “Drumline”, “Terminator: Salvation” and “We Are Marshall.” He was nominated by the ASC for “Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Movies of the Week/Pilot/Mini-Series” for his work on “The Rat Pack.” He is among a select group of cinematographers recognized by Canon as an "Explorer of Light" and by the Tiffen Company as an "ImageMaker". As an innovative cinematic pioneer Shane shares his passion for filmmaking through his educational blog, “Hurlbut Visuals” as well as the newly launched “Shane’s Inner Circle.”
