On September 30th, the International Cinematographers Guild presented the 2012 Emerging Cinematographer Awards at the DGA West Headquarters. After welcoming the guests to the 16th annual event and informing everyone they’d have the opportunity to watch each award recipient’s film in its entirety, ICG President Steven Poster, ASC, passed the mike on to the evening’s key note speaker, director Herner Herzog.
The notoriously minimalistic Herzog described the type of cinematographer he likes to work with. “They must be very physical, both in their ability to be physical and strong, but also to see physically.” He explained that he likes cinematographers that can walk into a room and quickly focus on the best spots to shoot from that will capture the action and provide an artistic finish.
While sharing his hatred of both viewfinders and the “video village,” Herzog expressed a love of applied arts, stating every cinematographer should have a firm understanding of drawing and painting as well as design. He also extolled the value of film.
“I insist that every filmmaker, every cinematographer, work with film at least once in their career,” said Herzog.
The winners of the 2012 Emerging Cinematographers Awards include:
John Barr – “The Carrier”
Daron Keet – “Ripple Effect”
Brian O’Carroll – “Angel”
Michael Pescasio “Don’t Let Your Love Annihilate”
James Takata – “Only Child”
Pete Villani – “Carjack”
Robert Webb – “The Girl in the Dark”
Stewart Whelan – “The Money Pet”
Honorable Mentions:
