Asbury Short Film Concert Returns To New York

Asbury Shorts, New York City’s longest running non-competitive short film exhibition, presents its acclaimed touring showcase: “The 34^th Asbury Short Film Concert” at The NYIT Auditorium on Broadway in Manhattan on Friday night, November 6^th with the first film blasting on to the screen at 7:30pm.  Asbury Shorts has been screening world-renowned, independently produced short films in Manhattan continuously since 1987.

Asbury Shorts features the best in live action comedy, drama and outstanding animation without promoting competition. Academy Award nominated Director Jason Reitman (“JUNO”, “Up in the Air”, “Thank You for Smoking,” “Young Adult”) has called Asbury Shorts “The best short film show I’ve ever seen!” Screening classic shorts from past years, combined with new global festival winners, Asbury Shorts New York provides a rare opportunity for the public to view world-class films on a real cinema screen as opposed to You Tube, iPads or computers.  Highlights from the November 6^th line-up include:

“Wire Cutters”- an outstanding achievement in short animation from  filmmaker Jack Anderson of Chapman University’s Dodge School of Filmmaking. A chance encounter proves fateful for two robots on a desolate mining planet. This short was a finalist for both the Student Academy Awards and the Student BAFTA Awards. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Nashville Film Festival and the Sonoma Film Festival.

“CHUM”-Two long time buddies who meet daily at the local spa have their lives upended by the arrival of a mysterious woman. Filmmakers Jorunder Ragnarsson and Elizabeth Rose won the Iceland Academy Award for Best short Film for this dark comedy short as well as top prize at The Montreal World Festival.

“The Girl and the Gondola” – British director Abbe Robinson’s poignant and charming story of a young Venetian girl dreaming of becoming a gondolier like her father while battling 900 years of tradition. This short was recently awarded Best Short Film at The Martha’s Vineyard Short Film Festival.

Asbury “Shorts Concerts” have been presented at The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Royal Festival Hall in London, The Lake Shore Theater in Chicago, The AERO Theatre in Los Angeles, The Director’s Guild Theater in Manhattan, Visions Cinema in D.C., SUMMER STAGE in Central Park and the Leminske Theater in Berlin, to name a few of the prestigious venues where the world’s best shorts have entertained audiences.
