Set Decorators Take Spotlight at DTLA Film Festival Sept. 23rd

Set decorators are crucial team members of any film, television or commercial production.  The details they instill in a location inform the viewer about crucial story elements, including setting, atmosphere, tone and reveal crucial aspects of a character's life.  Don't miss your chance to learn more about the work of set decorators when members of the Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA) present The Art Of “Silent Storytelling”: A Set Decorator’s Point Of View during the Downtown Film Festival LA Friday, September 23, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at City Club Los Angeles. Moderated by Ellen Harrington, Museum Collections Curator for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the panel will explore the essential creative role of the set decorator in storytelling for entertainment. Panelists include Emmy nominated Set Decorator, Susan Benjamin SDSA; AMPAS member Cal Loucks SDSA; Oscar nominated and Emmy winning Set Decorator Jan Pascale SDSA; and Emmy nominated Set Decorator Ann Shea SDSA.

The panel will speak about their collaborations with department heads such as cinematographer, production designer and costume designer, as well as the project's director, that enabled them to set the look of projects they have worked on.  They'll also highlight how they establish mood, tone and narrative through creating the storytelling environment via furnishings, art, lighting and other decorative objects both on a small and large scale. From robots to rubble, set decorators research, resource, acquire and/or create any and all objects required to dress the set.  Tickets for this event  are $20 and may be purchased through the Downtown Film Festival LA by visitinng: http://dtlaff.chillhound.pro/  PANEL INFORMATION The Art of “Silent Storytelling”: A Set Decorator’s Point of View Friday, September 23, 2016 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm City Club Los Angeles CONFIRMED PANELISTS Susan Benjamin SDSA (The Founder, The Brink, Frost/Nixon, Saving Mr. Banks, The Blind Side, The Stand)
