Golden Globes Nominee Announcements Get The Race Started

Critics' circles around the country have been weighing in on their top film picks for 2015, however it is the announcement of the Golden Globe nominees that really gets the race started. Once the list was announced Thursday, December 11th,  film fanatics began wondering what affect it will have on the contenders for Oscar nominations - a list that will be announced January 14, 2016.

While speculations run high through lists of snubs and surprises, an interesting barometer lies in the television categories; both in the content and the actors the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated.  While this year's Emmy winner in the drama category, "Game of Thrones" made the list, "Veep" and "Olive Kitteridge", the winners of  comedy and mini series respectively, were overlooked in all categories with the exception of a single nomination for "Veep's" leading lady Julia Louis-Dreyfus. AMC's "Better Call Saul" and "Mad Men" received their single nominations for male leads Bob Odenkirk and Jon Hamm.  Netflix's "House of Cards" saw a single nomination as well for female lead Robin Wright, and "Game of Thrones" received no acting nominations at all.

Television shows that received little to no attention in the Emmy race, however, found a home in the Globe noms, including "Casual", "Mr. Robot", "Outlander" and "Empire" - to name a few.

The Globes provide only two below-the-line categories.  For Best Original Score in a motion picture-: this year's nominees include Carter Burwell for "Carol", Daniel Pemberton for "Steve Jobs", Alexandre Desplat for "The Danish Girl", Ennio Morricone for "The Hateful Eight" and the team of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto for "The Revenant."  For Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, this year's nominees include: "Love Me Like You Do" from "Fifty Shades of Grey", "See You Again from "Furious 7", "One Kind of Love" from "Love & Mercy" "Writing's On The Wall" from "Spectre" and "Simple Song #3" from "Youth."  All five nominated original songs are included in the current short list of 74 songs vying for Oscar nominations.
