Multi Theater Crowd Honor 2016 MUAH Winners

By: Marjorie Galas

Loni Love, popular host of “The Real” perfectly addressed the massive uptick in attendance at the Make-Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards – otherwise known as MUAHs. With an audience split between the Bronson and Sheri Lansing Theaters on returning supporter Paramount’s lot –Love found herself running from one stage to the other.

“I feel like I’m commuting between two boyfriends,” joked Love.  “Like my past and future lovers – one’s twenty years older than the other.”

Despite a joke aimed at the Oscar’s diversity issue – “There’s never a diversity issue here, we have so many hair colors” – AMPAS president Cheryl Boone Isaacs kicked off the event, highlighting the key word to describe the evening’s nominees was “outstanding” and recognizing no film would be complete without the artistry of every hair and makeup artist in the guild.

Johnny Depp, a frequent presenter at the MUAHs, returned once again to recognize the evening’s two Lifetime Achievement Award winners: Ve Neill (makeup) and Yolanda Toussieng (hair).  Depp reflected on his thirty year relationship with Neill, from Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow.  Of the later character, Depp shared his favorite quote.

“We’re in Tampa, and I’m covered in leather and vinyl, and Ve says to me ‘Don’t sweat.’”

Upon receiving her award, Neill stated that she grew up wanting to create alien and monster makeup and was told that she would never be able to do that work for it was “a man’s job.”

“My first job was ‘The Star Trek’ movie, and there has been no returning.  Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something,” said Neill.

Upon accepting her award from Depp, Toussieng shared her enthusiasm as having the actor bestow the honor upon her.

“’Edward Scissorhands’ was a pivotal point of my career that brought me here, and that happened through working with Johnny,” said Toussieng. “It means so much to me to have you here.”

While the evening was filled with earnest gratitude bestowed by all the winners who thanked both their teams and their peers who voted for them, the most heart-felt acceptances came from the winners representing the Children and Teen Programming hair and makeup teams. Michael Johnston, representing the makeup team from “Henry Danger” was overjoyed to have the work of his department simply acknowledged, whereas Cool Benson, winner for best Makeup for Daytime Television for her work on “The Real” was so overcome, she couldn’t speak until Love gave her a reassuring hug.

“I just can’t believe this.  My team works so hard on this show.  Thank you, just, thank you,” said Benson.
