Change was in the air during the 2016 Creative Arts Emmys, held at the Microsoft Center September 10th and 11th. Celebrating his last year as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Television Academy, Maury McIntyre noted the decision to split this year’s Emmy craft celebration came in response to expand categories, such as the addition of outstanding actor and actress in a short form (these inaugural awards were won by Rob Cordory of “Children’s Hospital” and Patrika Darbo of “Acting Dead”). The Television Academy focused on grouping specific crafts together, breaking the categories into one evening focused on scripted work and another on non-scripted/reality/variety.
“For us, it’s a reflection of the quality of programming we’ve seen over the past decade. One night of Creative Arts, which has the bulk of the categories, wasn’t enough,” said McIntyre. “There is more work that goes on behind the camera than in front, and we really wanted to make sure we did this right, and treat everyone with respect.”
Promoting a show that would run from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, the Television Academy was nearly spot on, running no more than ten minutes over each evening. Unlike past years, the break allowed for more entertainment. Added into both shows was a performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Katherine McPhee, a former contestant of the Governor Award recipient “American Idol.” Each evening also featured a selection of amusing, self-produced spots “Me in 30 Seconds” –shorts that presented the trials and tribulations of everyone from production designers to sound recordists. Gone was the 45 second timer that began counting down once the award recipient’s name was called. Instead, the evening’s winners were relaxed and able to recount team members, producers, agents and, in Saturday’s program, Ryan Murphy, who was recognized by the likes of winners Lou Eyrich (Costume Design, “The People V. O.J. Simspon”), the casting team for “The People V. O.J. Simspon” and the makeup department on “American Horror Story: Hotel.” Even Mac Quayle, who won his first Emmy for his score to “Mr. Robot”, thanked Murphy.
“Ryan Murphy, I wouldn’t be here if you didn’t take a chance on me two years ago,” said Quayle, who’s first television score (and first Emmy nomination) came from scoring “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”
There were many categories that received much deserved, if not quite surprising, wins, including “Game of Thrones”, “Fargo” and “Grease Live!” The weekend, however, did offer several surprises. Edging out the likes of multi-Emmy winners Travis Wall (“So You Think You Can Dance”) and Derek Hough (“Dancing with the Stars) was first time nominee Kathryn Burns, who’s blend of comedy and highly-elaborate dance in “My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” resulted in the Outstanding Choreography Emmy. Also besting a pool of past nominees and winners was first time Emmy-nominee RuPaul Charles who took home the Outstanding Host of a Reality or Reality Competition program. While delighted with his win, RuPaul was most proud of the way his show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, brings people together.
“At a time when people are meeting from apps and there are less gay clubs where (many gay and trans individuals) feel more comfortable, I’m proud to offer a format where people are able to come together, meet each other and have a great time,” said Charles.
