Short Film Concert Returns To LA

Asbury Shorts, New York City’s longest running short film exhibition, returns to Los Angeles with its acclaimed touring program: “The Short Film Concert” on Thursday, October 20^th. The show takes place at The Aero Theater, located at 1328 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, beginning @7:30pm.  Tickets cost $11 general admission (with discounts for seniors/students/Members)

“The NY Short Film Concert” is not a festival and does not promote competition. The show is produced as a fast-paced theatrical event featuring the best in comedy, drama & outstanding short animation. Academy Award nominated Director Jason Reitman (“JUNO” “Up in the Air” “Thank You for Smoking”) calls Asbury Shorts “The Best Short Film Show I’ve Ever Seen!” Routinely screening classic shorts, combined with new international festival winners, ASNY provides a rare opportunity to see world-class films on the big screen, in a theatrical setting, rather than a computer or iPod.

Highlights of the two-hour showcase include:

- “The Wednesdays” from Irish director Conor Ferguson. This current international festival hit is a whimsical tale of an elderly couple discovering a modern, if somewhat illegal, way to keep their passions alive. “The Wednesdays” won the prestigious “International Award” at the world’s most important short film festival: Claremont-Ferrand in France.

-“Our Time is Up,” the 2007 Oscar Nominee for Best Live Action Short Film from director Rob Pearlstein of Los Angeles. Therapist Dr. Leonard Stern-played by acclaimed actor Kevin Pollack- discovers he has six weeks to live.

-Tulip,” a 2000 Oscar nominee from Australia directed by acclaimed actress Rachel Griffiths (HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” and ABC TV’s “Brothers & Sisters”). In all, there will be a dozen award winning short films from the past and present.

“The NY Short Film Concert” has been presented at Royal Festival Hall, London, The Lake Shore Theater in Chicago, Director’s Guild Theater in Manhattan, SUMMER STAGE in Central Park, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and The Leminske in Berlin, to name just a few of the prestigious venues where audiences have enjoyed the world ‘s best shorts.

Centropolis Entertainment, the production company owned by Director Roland Emmerich and Producer Ute Emmerich, is serving as Main Presenting Sponsor. Centropolis has produced films including Independence Day, The Patriot, 10,000 BC, and 2012 to name a few.  Their latest production: “Anonymous,” is scheduled has been released to theaters nationwide and stars Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and Derek Jacobi.

The Donald Douglas Company built the Aero, a beloved neighborhood cinema, in 1939.  After closing in 2003,the theatre underwent a $1 million dollar restoration and was re-opened in 2005 by the American Cinematheque, which also operates the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.  The Aero The Aero specializes in screening classic domestic, foreign and independent movies.
