Set to pounding drums and hypnotic house rhythms, the 16th Annual Golden Trailer Awards kicked off with a three-minute trailer highlighting the evening’s nominees. Excitedly pounding his fists and pacing the stage of the Saban Theater mid-evening, May 6th, 2015, first time host T.J. Miller summed up the value of the evening’s award show in his one sentence response to the trailer:
"That trailer was better than any movie I saw all year!”
Over the next three hours, Miller, accompanied by fellow actors Missy Pyle, Neal McDonough, Ian Gomez and Chuck Liddell presented awards to twenty categories ranging from “Best Music” to “Best in Show” in theatrical trailers. This selection was a small percentage of Golden Trailer Awards that were presented off stage to a range of categories including television, posters, graphics, viral campaigns and foreign campaigns. The presenters kept the spirits high, both literally and figuratively, as they shifted between categories and “packages” featuring ample segments of the nominated trailer within each category.
“Does anyone else have a cocktail in their hands,” asked McDonough before presenting the “Best Comedy” award for “Ted 2.”
“I call it, ‘Ted 2, Audience 0,’” joked McDonough. “Also, I want you to know I didn’t write that joke.”
Approaching the final categories, Miller ran through the crowd, handing out cold beers he'd stashed in his jacket pockets. He presented the evening’s frequently nominated and winner of major categories Best Drama (Selma) and Golden Fleece (The Giver) to the boisterous Buddha Jones crew.
“Buddha’s are supposed to be calm and Zen,” said Miller as he presented their artists the Best Drama award. Upon receiving their gold trophy displaying a small trailer as its crown, the team said “Thank you, Oprah” to the renown producer of “Selma.”
