The Academy Presents Hollywood Costumes Exhibit

While the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has many months of renovations and construction to undergo before it's grand opening, a special exhibit, "Hollywood Costumes", will open October 2nd , 2014 on its grounds at the historic Robinsons May building.

Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London the exhibition is designed to "explore the central role of costume design - from the glamorous to the very subtle - as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling.  Over 150 costumes from the 1940s, including the  original ruby slippers worn in "The Wizard of Oz"  to last year's Oscar nominated designs featured in "American Hustle" will be on display.

Throughout the course of the exhibit, running from October 2nd to March 2, 2015, a number of special programs, screenings and discussions will be held.  The first special program announced by the Academy is "The Perfect Match: Hollywood Costume Collaborations" - a screening series exploring the collaboration and partnership between costume designers and directors.  Confirmed costume designers who will appear to introduce their films and discuss their collaboration include Mary Zophres (directors Joel and Ethan Coen), Deborah Nadoolman Landis (director John Landis) and Marilyn Vance (director John Hughes).  Other programs awaiting details include "The Costume of Silent Drama: Mary Pickford and Little Annie Rooney", "Defining Character: The Art of the Costume Designer",  "Street Clothes: Contemporary Costuming in New Hollywood", "Two Sides of a Designer",  "Return to Oz: Costuming the Big Adventures of 1985" and "Masters of Costume Design."

The exhibit is curated by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, an Acadamy Award nominated costume designer, Academy member, and founding director of UCLA's David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design, in collaboration with Sir Christopher Frayling, Professor Emeritus of Cultural History,Royal College of Art and set and costume designer and Victoria and Albert Museum Assistant Curator Keith Lodwick.
